Abstract

Introduction: The importance of pre-anaesthesia check up before surgery remains unclear among most of the patients undergoing surgery. The study was conducted with the objective to understand the level of knowledge of patients about anaesthesia and to evaluate the level of the information perceived .

Methods: A prospective cross sectional study was conducted in a pre-anesthesia checkup clinic  including 18-65 years patients undergoing elective surgery with American Society of Anaesthesiologists Class I and II and excluding patients with dementia or cognitive impairment. Data collected in questionnaire format were demographic profile, educational status, knowledge about preanaesthetic checkup and information perceived by patients using a 5 point Likert Scale.

Results: Out of 148 patients, 115 participants knew the purpose of their visit. Out of which 48.69% have visited to take the date of operation, 37.39% have followed surgeon instruction, 4.34% have come for pre-anaesthesia assessment and 9.56% have visited to know whether surgery can be done or not. Educational status was illiterate (19.59%), primary school (42.56%), secondary school (27.02%), higher secondary school (19.45%) and others (1.34%). Out of 117 participants who have said they know surgical problems and operation plan, 72.64% have known both diagnosis and surgical plan and 27.35% have known diagnosis correctly but did not know surgical plan.

Conclusion: Majority of patients undergoing elective surgery have inadequate knowledge of pre anaesthetic evaluation and have perceived inadequate information about anaesthesia and surgical techniques. Improvement in educational status of patients and communication skills of both surgeons and anaesthesiologists might improve knowledge of patients.
