Indwelling arterial catheters are used routinely for continuous hemodynamic monitoring during major surgery and in critically ill patients. The radial artery is the preferred location for arterial catheterization because of its reliable anatomical accessibility, ease of insertion, and low rate of complications, including a rare occurrence of permanent ischemic complications at 0.09%. Complications associated with arterial catheterization include permanent ischemic injury, temporary blockage, sepsis, localized infection, bleeding, or the formation of a hematoma. We describe a complication in which arterial catheterization was associated with distal ischemia. This case report highlights the risk associated with arterial cannulation and
suggests using a dependable test to confirm the patency of the palmar arch to prevent ischemic damage.
